Alison Krauss and Union Station
Lonely Runs Both Ways

(Rounder Records 2006)

Here, the lady who brought bluegrass from outdoor festivals and small venues to big theaters and arenas, again, shines like the star she is. This new CD is uncommonly great. The much anticipated follow-up to Live!, their Grammy-winning Platinum album, Lonely Runs Both Ways is the new studio album from the world's finest purveyors of Bluegrass music, Alison Krauss and Union Station. Featuring incredible songs like "Wouldn't Be So Bad," "Goodbye Is All We Have," and the lead single, "Restless," Lonely Runs Both Ways is another unforgettable collection of songs from this multiple (17 Grammy's to date) award-winning act. The first cut, Restless is a great song about how someone can feel so lonely and be always on the run, much like the life of a constantly touring musician. Alison has such a beautiful and sensitive voice, and you can really feel the compassion in her voice on this song. Another highlight song for me is If I Didn't Know Any Better. It is a very touching love song. Unionhouse Branch is hot and lively. Alison's fiddle playing on this track is so impressive, that it will definitely get you on your feet. The old Woody Guthrie ballad, Pastures of Plenty features Alison's bandmate Ron Block on excellent vocals and banjo. I loved this song, which depicts depression era America, with many of the lyrics ringing true today in the Bush era economics affecting rural Americans, and middle-lower income American's, the folks Woody loved to write songs about. When the history of acoustic music is written let it be said that Alison bridged the gap from 'old-timey' music to 21st Century bluegrass with music whose tones and styles go back to the roots of bluegrass itself, the Carter Family and Bill Monroe. New harmonies emerge, new voice bends, new rhythms come across. My favorite cut on the disc was Crazy As Me, Ron Block's new song. A Living Prayer is just haunting! Alison's pristeen voice with just two guitars -- music just doesn't get any better than that. My admiration to Ron Block for writing such a great tune! But, all the songs are winners here! You won't be disappointed picking this one up! It's definitely another contender for the Grammy's.
