Gerardo Nunez is both a guitar virtuoso and a highly respected flamenco innovator. This album reflects the music he grew up listening to, and to the music for which he retains a passion to this day. At first listen, one would immediately draw comparrisons with Otmar Leibert or Baden Powell due to the wide range of influences incorporated in his work. With the help of veteran jazz greats, John Patitucci on bass, Danilo Perez on piano, and eclectic Armenian percussionists Arto Tunchboyaciyan and Carmen Cortes. The album also features two other guest musicians, also strongly rooted in the nuevo flamenco style, flamenco guitarists Strunz and Farah. For the uninitiated this album will be nothing short of a revelation. For the rest of us, Calima proves once again why this artist is regarded as the most technically astonishing, soulfully innovative player of the neuvo flamenco generation. On each cut, this amazing backup group of musicians follows Gerardo nuance for nuance. Salmedina and Tarifa are the high points of the set, but the overall level is quite high musically as well as maintaining a great deal of energy. A most entrancing experience. information: email: alula@aol.com Review by Ben Kettlewell |
