Suzanne Ciani
'Turning'
(Seventh Wave Productions SWP 7006-2)

An amazing group of master musicians gathered by Suzanne Ciani (pronounced 'chi- ani') join forces on Suzanne's new album 'Turning'.

They are: Suzanne Ciani (piano and synths), Chyi-Yu (vocals), Paul McCandless (oboe, French Horn, English Horn, alto sax), Steve Kindler (violin), Michael Manring (bass), Teja Bell ( guitar), John Hernandez ( V-Drum System), and Matt Eackle (flute)

I have reviewed previous recordings by Ciani before, and they always come through with heartfelt, exquisitely nuanced performances. Each brings a sense of dedicated craftsmanship and deep spirituality to the music. 'Turning' is supremely relaxing and energizing at the same time, letting the listener bask in the soft ambiance of the mellow tones and sending gentle vibrations into the atmosphere to take the edge off a hard day's work or float in the sensuous rapture that can only be elongated by music such as this. Songs like the title cut, "Turning", "I Believe in Love" and "Bird and Fish" are enchanting, but not intrusive, lively and lilting, with melodies that are easy to appreciate and delicious to savor. On "Waltz for Julia" this compelling ensemble of performers make the most of every note. If you are looking for an aural aphrodisiac, here's one. Individually the members of this ensemble are all stars. Together they encourage each other to shine even brighter.

One of the principal appeals of Ciani's sound is its romantic aura, fluid style and gentle sounds. Suzanne's arrangements are sensuous and soft edged, with flourishes of technical grandiosity. This conveys the feeling of relaxed pleasure, of savoring the melodies just because they are sweet. This wonderful new release is a fascinating and rewarding listening experience, which is unpredictable, yet extremely satisfying. A phenomenal and inspired performance.
