Alex De Grassi
'The Water Garden'

(Tropo Records TRD-1001) 1999

This is a new album and a new label for one of the original Windham Hill icons of modern acoustic guitar. This new disc is comprised of ten cuts composed on the theme of water. Actually nothing liquid comes to mind listening to the staccato style of De Grassi, but the songs are exceptional nevertheless. It is full of great melodies and textures. De Grassi develops his themes very well, add to that a dynamic engineering job and a lot of heart and you've got a special guitar release with flowing passages, fine arrangements, and truly engaging music. Well developed tracks give De Grassi plenty of room to stretch out and display his often dazzling chops. Also, special mention should be given to the beautiful photographs by Barry Brukoff and Luis Delgado. After all these years De Grassi is still as innovative and spirited as ever.
