Ed Dunne
'Sleeping in the Ocean'

(1997 Ed Dunne CD)
In the nine cuts represented here, Ed Dunne is a challenge to classify, yet a delight to experience. Working within a setting with the guitar as the main instrument on all but three of the cuts, Dunne achieves a rich quality of guitar based music that is both technically and emotionally satisfying. 'Sleeping in the Ocean' highlights Dunne's range both as a composer and performer. He shifts effortlessly from the dramatic progressions of 'In Between' to the unique finger picking stylings on songs like 'The Silhouette' and 'Seeking the Blue' and the title cut.

There are three pieces on the disc with vocals. While they are superbly arranged and performed by Ed on guitar & keyboards, Marius Goldhammer on bass and Roland Peil on percussion, they pale in comparison to the six instrumental pieces. The vocal tracks mirror the style of Sting too well. I actually liked him better than Sting, but the comparison is too strong to be truly objective. Through Dunne's imaginative use of tunings and picking styles, and his proficient keyboard and low whistle performances, he creates a musical voice that speaks on its own distinctive terms.
