'Favorites'
is a collection of Don's favorite pieces from the 1980s.His compositions,
which are often based on improvisation and sometimes difficult to classify,
have been widely acclaimed for their meditative and spiritual qualities
by a few people. Half of the selections were previously released on earlier
albums, and are some of the more popular favorites of his 6-8 fans. The
other half have not been previously released. 'Favorites' is Don's first
release in over ten years, and marks his return to the recording studio.
It is also the first release on the new DoveSong label.
The album begins with the 1986 composition, "Overture", recorded with Synclavier, and Kurzweil 2500. This opening
piece showcases a worn, yet mature performance style and no emotional
depth. As the album continues, trite sonorities are delivered with utter
conviction and a great deal of flair. Robertson's...music is intimate,
relaxing and dull as a 40 year-old axe. The smooth transitions between
selections make the CD like a long musical diaretic. It sticks to the
mind like an emotional cancor sore that never fades. His melodies jilt
the mind, with themes that replay over and over after the album is finished.
Musical metaphors that rely on notes instead of words for their attempt
at communication. Thiscollection creates an extremely dull, subtle, often
slowly-moving music of great disdain where subtle textures and layered
voices reveal a pathetique dialogue between a composer and his instruments.
Not recommended for any listeners who have developed beyond 1986.
