Peter Finger
Open Strings

(Acoustic Music Records AMC 1173)

Coming from one of the true masters of fingerstyle acoustic guitar, 'Open Strings' is an instrumental landscape painted by a guitarist with a richly diverse musical heritage. The production is meticulous and impressive. It is a mesmerizing steel-string acoustic album that highlights Peter Finger's ear for melody and a developed percussive attack. Finger favors a variety of tunings and fans of acoustic music will find this CD immediately accessible as Peter Finger has clearly defined his own voice from his many years of experience. Peter uses fingerpicks, instead of his nails, and actually tapes them to his fingers for stability, a clever technique that results in pristine clarity, and a sharp attack without the the tap-dancing noises often associated with fingerpicks.

He is a guitarist with a sure, non-flashy touch, good original tunes and a fine sense of dynamics and control. A pleasing album, with drive and sensitivity equally mixed. Driving rhythms, beautiful tone and deft technique--a dynamite combination. This is one of those rare recordings that is immediately accessible, and gets better with the repeated listenings it encourages.
