Producing in the Home Studio with Pro Tools (Book/CD)
by David Franz
Paperback - 250 pages $34.95 (September 2001)
Berklee Press Publications; ISBN: 0634032216

This book arrived at the perfect moment, since I recently upgraded my studio from a software based sequencing package to the software-hardware combination of Digi Design's DIGI 001 hardware interface, and Pro Tools LT software.

In comparison to the two large manuals from the manufacturer, I found Franz's book much easier to comprehend, providing a much greater variety of information. Whether you are just starting out, or are an existing user looking to maximize your system, this is an invaluable tool.

The book is presents an unintimidating approach. It shows how to build the right system to suit specific needs. The sections on signal processing, TDM and RTAS plug-ins, virtual synths and samplers, MIDI / Audio sequencers, hardware controllers, and the art of audio production are well documented and easy to comprehend.

Each section contains many very valuable insights from someone who know Pro Tools like the back of his hand. This book is much more than a simple how-to manual for Pro Tools users.

Every aspect of music production is covered, from the original idea to the final marketing of the finished product. This 250 page book is presented in a logical, easy-to-read format, divided into four main sections.

The first section, "Getting Started," covers tasks such as setting up your home studio and improving the efficiency of your recording system, then, focusing on recording new ideas. Franz explains the basics of producing professional quality audio, delving deeper inside the parameters of recording and editing digital audio, as well as recording MIDI tracks.

Franz walks the reader through each portion of the tutorials with illustrated examples on an accompanying CD-ROM. There are a variety of templates on the ROM disc, so you can immediately jump right in and start creating music with the Pro Tools system.

The next portion of the book is called "Preproduction," and, as it's title suggests, goes in-depth into many crucial issues, i.e. the producer and engineer's roles in preproduction, as well as detailed information and examples of advanced studio setups.

The third section of the book, "Production," deals with the actual process of audio production. Here, Franz discusses how to improve your system performance and efficiency. He defines the producer's role during the production process, leading up to the considerations a musician must make as an engineer.

The fourth section of the book covers all aspects of "Postproduction," with almost forty detailed pages covering every nuance of mixing and mastering. Following this section are five very helpful appendices.

This comprehensive home-studio guide will show you, step by step, how to create the highest-quality recordings by honing your production skills and engineering techniques. Franz offers the reader a complete guide to the entire production process, covering every detail that producers and engineers need to know, in great detail along each step of the way.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book to both home studio owners and professionals alike.
