Gillian Welch
SOUL JOURNEY

(Acony Records-Stony Plain/Warner 2003)

soul journeyOn their latest collaboration, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have produced another fine album of original roots inspired music which showcases their fresh and original combination of old time gospel, blues, bluegrass, and country music. Fiddles and drums have been added economically and effectively to enhance the sparse uncluttered arrangements, a bit more orchestrated compared to their last album, Revelator.

Welch's vocals combine the down home sweetness of Dolly Parton with the strength and soul of Patsy Cline. Gillian's vocals range from quiet and breathy ballads to emotionally charged pieces like ' I Made A Lovers Prayer' . The music ranges from traditional bluegrass to modern country and gospel. Each song is arranged to showcase its lyrics in mood and emotion. None of the added instruments on Soul Journey come across as being added just because they was available in the studio. The slow ballads are exceptionally delivered with an understated reverence. David Rawlings' production skills on Gillian's latest offering are excellent and understated, giving each track an up-close, intimate feel. You get the sense that Gillian and David were sitting right there in your living room. Though the sound is intentionally rural, there is a subtle urban sophistication which is felt throughout the entire ten song performance. I am most impressed by the casual charm and humility this couple exudes in their collaborative efforts. Highly recommended.
