Steven King
'Eclectic Swing'
(Steven King Music CD04) cd 1997
This is an amazing acoustic guitar album that should delight
everyone. Finger picking legend, Steven King delivers 14
well chosen selections for this release. Besides 4
incredible original tunes, Steven whizzes through old
favorites like Irving Berlin 's 'Puttin on the Ritz', Rogers
and Hart, 'The Lady is a Tramp', and classics like 'Tuxedo
Junction', and 'April in Paris' . He also adds a couple of
movie themes for good measure; 'Midnight Cowboy', and 'The
Pink Panther'. There is even an unbelievable acoustic guitar
rendition of The Beatles 'I am the Walrus'. Granted, we're
slipping away from swing a bit here, but King ties
everything together flawlessly.
In the 14 cuts represented
here King remains a challenge to classify, yet a delight to
experience. Working within a solo guitar setting, King
achieves a rich quality of guitar based music that is both
technically and emotionally satisfying. 'Eclectic Swing'
highlights King's range both as a composer and performer. He
shifts effortlessly from the dramatic progressions of
'Puttin on the Ritz' to the unique finger picking stylings
he is noted for on songs like 'Cuana' and 'Survival'.
Through Steven's imaginative use of tunings and picking
styles he creates a musical voice that speaks on its own
distinctive terms.
