Carl Weingarten
'Blue Faith'

(Multiphase Records)

Blue Faith is the long awaited follow up to Carl Weingarten's, The Acoustic Shadow. A collection of 16 instrumental works, Blue Faith features Carl Weingarten on treated slide guitar, and dobro, accompanied by an international ensemble of musicians including Michael Manring on electric and acoustic bass, Kat Epple & Barbara Else on flutes, Jie-Bing Chen on erhu, Barry Cleveland on guitars, percussion, Joe Venegoni on hammer dulcimer, percussion, Forrest Fang on violin, Dan Reiter on cello, Sukhawat Ali Kahn and Susan McGowan on vocals, Robert Powell on pedal steel, Marc Pale on keyboards, Anna Karney and Tom Whitehead on piano, Bill Ortiz on trumpet, and Bruce Levin on drums Blue Faith also features beautiful and provocative cover art by Scottish artist Catherine McIntyre.

It strikes me, looking at Carl Weingarten's career, that the man has introduced several new directions in his music which did not reach complete fulfillment of their potential until 'The Acoustic Shadow' and this latest offering, 'Blue Faith' .Carl Weingarten has created an album of daring adventures which stir the soul and plunges the listener into a journey of epic proportions. From the opening cut, "Illumina Suite", it's evident that Weingarten has significantly progressed since his last album "The Acoustic Shadow". The new album features a lot more interaction with other musicians, mixed with Weingarten's innovative guitars and slide along with a healthy dose of creative sampling techniques, a wide variety of stringed instruments and percussion, voice, and studio processing to create a wholly unique sounding record.

Each track is a miniature voyage, and from the serenity of the title cut, "Blue Faith", to the staggering dynamics of "Harvest", Weingarten along with his trusty ensemble, remains focused and balanced. This is what independent music is all about. Exciting new directions in music that absolutely defy genre and classification. I was knocked out by the brave and personal nature of the music. With artists like Weingarten and labels like Multiphase, there will always be music for those of us who desire something out of the ordinary. For the moment, those who are willing to abandon themselves to this challenging disc will be well rewarded."
