Michael Bross
'Soul Fragments'
(SoundPlanet - 1999)

Between working as a sound designer and composer for films, Michael Bross has spent the last few years piecing together Soul Fragments, resulting in a sonic experiment of large proportions, dark moods and multiple personalities. In 1995 he composed music for Ripper starring Christopher Walken and John Rhys-Davies. In 1998, he completed work on Black Dahlia which featured Dennis Hopper and Terri Garr. Since Ripper and Black Dahlia were distributed in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, his music was exposed to people all over the world. "I was getting email from people everywhere who wanted to hear more from me," Bross states.

Arty, interesting and very nicely executed, these fragments make for an oddly cohesive whole. The CD contains 14 compositions with almost 70 minutes of music. This is an album based on building and intensifying moments. Instead of thinking in strict terms of musical notes and pitches, he also thinks in terms of sound sculpting and texture. While neither sonically or rhythmically unique "Soul Fragments" works because it is a collection of pieces that retains the listener's interests. The reward is a pleasant ride, one worth listening to repeatedly.
