memesisMimesis ~ Art Imitating Life
(Psy-harmonics PSY062 - 2008)
Mimesis is a new recording project featuring the poetic words and voice of one of Australia's most prominent singer/song writers, Steve Kilbey (The Church) and the stunning complex ambient music of Melbourne based producer Simon Polinski (Hesius Dome/Ornament) along with Colin Berwick (Big Country), David Abiuso (Victorian State Orchestra) and guest musicians, Geoffrey Hales (Rip Van Hippy), Ollie Olsen & John Kilbey.

Polinski manages to take a diverse set of musicians and make them more accessible, and his collaborators have never sounded better nor the material more immediate. Not only are the spoken word poems great, the music is hauntingly beautiful, and Simon gets to display his full range of sonic design possibilities. Steve Kilbey's voice has the ability to lull you into a state of tranquility. Like waves on a shore of sound, he pulls you into a crystalline world of perfectly placed notes and contemplations. Each song is perfection in itself and yet the mood melts the songs together to form a unified frame of mind to give you a relaxing buzz that often turns haunting and delicate in intimacy. The lyrics on this album show a depth beyond casual contemplations about life and love. Suffused by intoxicating melodies and detailed, probing arrangements, the songs merge myth and mystery and are rich in metaphors and magic. Great art for audiophiles everywhere.
