Vidna Obmana
Memories Compiled 2
(Projekt Archive R08) 1999

This wonderful two disk retrospective is comprised of thirty ambient pieces that develop quietly and naturally. They are remastered archival recordings from 1988 - 1991, resequenced by the artist, with an additional 30 minutes of unreleased music from that period added onto each disc. Obmana allows the music to develop slowly, exploring the resulting meditative atmospheres. The mind is often transported great distances by good music. Vidna's double album transports the listener great distances indeed, ... meandering liquid soundscapes, organically blending synth textures with organic sample loops, tapes, and acoustic treatments.

The first disk, entitled " Near the Flogging Landscape" is comprised of fourteen tracks recorded between December, 1989, and March, 1990. This is ambient music that breaths an explorational soul into its inner space. Pieces such as "Floes on Miracles", "From Within the Cold", and "Dwells into the Heart", possess a depth and ellegance that holds up after many listens. The mood is somewhat somber and introspective, echoing a pulse that moves and refuses completion. This is indeed, a contemplative release that is as near to heavenly as you might expect to get with mere sonic vibrations drifting between your ears.

The second disk, "Refined on Gentle Clouds" recorded between December, 1989, and January, 1991, is a meditative blend of atmospherics. Lovers of soft, ambient music will enjoy this disc of floating inner space. The disk is a cohesive collection of sixteen pieces.

The collection is surprisingly consistent, especially for a retrospective album. The combination of sounds and emotions develop as a sort of physical sense or entity, a concrete pulse of ambience defining the musical moment forever.

I've been a big fan of Vidna Obmana for many years, and this is a welcome addition to cherish for years to come. Highly recommended.
