AIRWAVES
'Second Shift'

Oscar Menzel's sophomore effort exceeds its solid predecessor by strong artistic development as he explores more varied elements in ambient settings. The mystical Tantric Flesh Dream starts things off with Gregorian chants underneath lush synths which give way to odd female vocals and melodic electronic pulses. Waveforms surprises with an amiable, upbeat tropical sound accentuated by its bouncing sequenced rhythms. Airwaves explore deeper space music (accompanied by deep, reverberant male vocals) on the appropriately-titled Like Floating In Space as well as on Other Stars, where droning electronics pull you into its aural cloud. As with his debut, Menzel takes familiar music and reinterprets it for a very satisfying listening experience. (Opcion Sonica, Tamaulipas 125-23, Col. Condesa C.P. 06140, Mexico, D.F.)
